Halloween pet safety · From your emergency vet

    Treats for you.
    Tricks for them.

Halloween is one of the busiest nights of the year for pet emergencies. A few simple swaps keep the scares on screen.

    • Chocolate

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats — dark and baking chocolate are the most dangerous. Keep the candy bowl well out of reach.

    • Sugar-free candy & gum

Many contain xylitol, which can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs — even in small amounts.

    • Raisins & grapes

Raisins and grapes can cause sudden kidney injury in dogs. Watch out for trail mix, cookies and party snacks.

    • Wrappers & lollipop sticks

Foil, wrappers and sticks can cause choking or a blockage in the gut. Bin them straight away.

    • Glow sticks & candles

Glow-stick liquid irritates mouths and makes pets drool; candles and jack-o’-lanterns can singe curious noses and tails.

    • Costumes & the doorbell

Choose costumes that never restrict breathing or movement, and give anxious pets a quiet room away from trick-or-treaters.

    Spooky symptoms? We’re open 24/7.

If your pet ate something they shouldn’t or just isn’t acting right, call us right away — don’t wait for symptoms.

    Find emergency care

General guidance, not a diagnosis. If you’re worried about your pet, call your vet or an emergency hospital right away.

    Spread the word

    Rally your
    humans.

Every costume deserves an audience. Share the contest with your favorite pet people.

    The not-so-scary details

    A few things
    to sink your
    teeth into.

    How does voting work?

You may cast one vote in each category (Dog and Cat) per email address. Tap Vote on any entry, enter your email address and we will send you a confirmation link. Your vote counts once you click it. Public voting runs Oct 27 – Oct 30.

Can I vote for more than one pet?

You get one vote in each category: one for your favorite in Team Dog and one for your favorite in Team Cat. A second vote in the same category from the same email address will not be counted.

Why do I have to confirm my vote by email?

Email confirmation keeps the contest fair by stopping automated and duplicate votes. Votes that are never confirmed are not counted. Voting closes October 30, 2026, at 12:00 AM CDT: a vote confirmed after that moment is not counted, even if you cast it earlier, so click the link as soon as it arrives. Not seeing the email? Check your spam or promotions folder.

Why might some votes not count?

To keep the competition fair, voting activity is monitored. Only confirmed, eligible votes count toward the results — votes that appear to be duplicated, automated or otherwise fraudulent may be excluded.

What kind of photos can I upload?

You can upload up to 3 photos per entry in JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC format, up to 8 MB each. HEIC photos straight from your iPhone are welcome too.

    Who can enter?

Anyone! There is no ZIP code or location restriction for this contest. Choose the Dog or Cat category when you enter. Every entry is reviewed before it appears in the gallery.

    When are the winners announced?

Winners will be announced on October 31, 2026. The Dog and Cat entries with the most eligible votes win their category.

    What do the winners get?

Each winner takes home a Halloween gift basket: a $100 gift card, an Allied Angel Fund blanket, an Allied bandana and toys and treats. There may be a few extra surprises tucked in, too!

Where do I pick up the prize?

Prizes are picked up at any Allied Veterinary Services location. Please pick up your prize by November 30, 2026, at 6:00 PM CST. Prize pickup is in person only, and prizes cannot be mailed. Choose the location that suits you and our team will coordinate getting your prize package there.
